In 2007, after successfully opening two aesthetic practices for other practitioners, Joanne, along with her supportive physician husband, decided to open Aesthetics & Genetics by the Bay in beautiful Cannery Row. They chose to provide quality aesthetics’ services as well as genetic counseling for individuals with a strong family history of an inherited cancer syndrome.
The company has continued to evolve over 16 years to “Face First Laser Clinic” and most recently as “Cannery Row Medical Aesthetics”. Under the direction of her husband, Roger Shiffman, MD, she, and her team of experts, deliver state-of-the-art skincare from Botox® Cosmetic to laser skin rejuvenation, tattoo removal, dermal fillers, liquid facelifts and PDO thread lift.
Joanne's nursing career began in 1984 in Med/Surg working the night shift and then shortly after moving to Oncology Nursing where she became chemo-certified and remained for several years until her promotion to Clinical Coordinator for the Med/Surg Unit. Joanne then spent time in the coronary care unit where she recovered the open-heart patients after bypass and heart valve surgery. She moonlighted for a time in Home Health to help make ends meet.
After coming to the Monterey Peninsula, Joanne took a position as a part-time recovery room nurse in an outpatient medical unit in Monterey and concurrently as an emergency room nurse at Natividad Medical Center and Salinas Valley Medical Center.
In the year 2000, while returning to the University to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Joanne took a position as a “Spa” nurse at Pebble Beach learning about the specialty of aesthetics, Botox® and fillers, when this emerging field was in its infancy. About this time, she was also recruited to join the Sexual Assault Response Team for Monterey County to perform evidentiary exams on victims and suspects of sexual assault.
Upon completion of her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, BSN, and obtaining her public health nurse credential, PHN, Joanne wanted to return to her Oncology roots and began the study of cancer genetics at the City of Hope which targeted at-risk individuals with an inherited family cancer syndrome. Joanne received her credential as a Genetics Clinical Nurse, GCN, from ISONG, the International Society of Nurses in Genetics. Joanne was also invited to present at the ISONG meeting in Salt Lake City where she lectured on “Starting a Community-Based Cancer Genetics Program”.
Joanne is dedicated to the art and science of skincare and has been driven to enormous success as a renowned leader in the aesthetics field. “I love to enhance people’s natural beauty and help them to appreciate their own uniqueness!” states Joanne.
